How do I start?

Before you go on the road you need to be 17 and hold a valid Provisional Driving Licence and be able to read a new style number plate with or without glasses at 20m.

I wear glasses?

It’s ok. As long as you can read a number plate with or without glasses at 20m you are ok.

Do I need a medical?

No.  You only need a medical if you are applying to do a test for Large Good Vehicles. However if you are on any medication from your doctor you need to consult them to see if this medication will affect you driving.

Who can teach me to drive?

Anyone who is over the age of 21, and has held a UK/EEC Driving Licence for 3 years. However unless they are an ADI they cannot take payment for this. It is strongly advised that you get professional driving tuition.

How long will it take to pass?

Statistically the average is 45 hours of professional tuition plus 20 hours with a relative or friend. This does vary from pupil to pupil.

What tests do I have to take?

Both a Theory and Practical.

What does it cost ?

£50.

How do I get a driving licence?

You need to fill in a form D1. Available at the post office, or I can provide one. You can do it online if you have a Digital Passport.

When can I apply for a licence?

3 Months before you are 17

Do I have  to be 17 to apply for a licence?

No. You can apply 3 Months before you are 17.

Where do I get an application form?

Available at the post office, or you can do it online.

What identification do I need for a driving licence?

Valid  Passport, Birth Certificate, National Insurance number, wage slip

Do I need it to be signed by someone?

Yes, they must have known you for 2 years

Who can sign my application?

Anyone who has known you for 2 years and state that the photograph you have provided “is a true likeness

Can apply online?

Yes if you have a valid digital passport.

How much is a lesson?

£26 per hour

Student Discount less £1 per hour

Do I get a discount for paying up front?

Yes 10 hours £250 will work out at £25/hour

Theory Test

What is the theory test?

The theory test consists of two parts, a multiple choice section and a hazard perception section.

How many questions are there?

50

What is the pass mark?

You need to get 43 out of 50 and score 44 out of 75 on the hazard perception.

How long is a theory test valid?

2 years. You must pass a practical test within this period.

Why do I have to do this?

You need to pass the theory testbefore you can apply for a practical test.

Where is the theory test centre?

The local theory test centre is on Town Road Hanley

How long do I have to wait for a theory test date?

The average time for a test date is 2 weeks but this can vary.

How long does it take?

You must complete the 50 questions in 50 minutes. You can have a 3 minute break before the hazard perception starts.

What is Hazard perception?

You need to identify up to 15 hazards as quickly as possible from 14 video clips

Practical Test

Where is the Practical test centre?

What is the cost of a practical test?

What is independent driving?

For a 10 minute part of the test you will have to drive independently by following road signs, a series of instructions or a combination of both.

How many manoeuvres do I have to do? 

1. plus 30% of tests will include an emergency stop

The average time for a test date is 4-6 weeks but this can vary.

How long does the practical test take?

About 40 mins

Where will I be driving?

Basically anywhere!  Your test route will include a variaty of road condition.From 2012 no test routes will be published.

How many faults can I make and still pass?

15, 16 is a fail however if one is a serious or dangerous fault you will fail.

Pass Plus

What is Pass Plus?

It is 6 hours of additional training divided into 6 modules including motorway training

Is there a test?

No. A Pass Plus registered ADI can sign this off after the training.

Why should I do it?

To improve your basic driving skills and you will be able to reduce your insurance costs

Do I get a discount on my insurance?

Yes up to 40% this does vary from company to company
